Phil studies and paints landscapes, portraits and interiors. With landscape he is seeking out scratches on its surface – modern, neolithic or Roman – remnants from the peak of Victorian construction – spoil from major industrial projects in remote locations,... things that show signs of life and history. His portraits benefit from the processes learned from painting expressive landscapes, all the better to get to the personality of the sitter.
He avoids obvious focal points in the images he's creating, while drawing fluid natural scenes that feel true and balanced; subjects could move in and out of the margins.
Phil has been painting and exhibiting across the UK for 35 years and counting.
